Jubilation in Kano as Governor Yusuf Reappoints Sunusi Lamido as Emir

By Matthew Eloyi

In a historic move, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State on Friday reinstated Sunusi Lamido Sunusi as the 16th Emir of Kano. The governor presented Sunusi with the letter of appointment during a ceremony attended by members of the Kano Emirate Council, district heads, and title holders.

The reappointment follows the governor’s signing of the amended Kano State Emirate Council Law on Thursday. The amended law abolished the five emirate councils established by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019 and deposed the emirs appointed during Ganduje’s tenure. This legal adjustment cleared the way for Sunusi’s return to the throne, from which he was deposed in 2020.

Governor Yusuf described Sunusi as a “victim of the immediate past administration,” emphasizing that his reappointment restores him to his rightful position to lead the people of Kano. The ceremony, which marked a new chapter in the history of the Kano Emirate, was met with jubilation across the state, reflecting widespread support and excitement among the populace.

The return of Sunusi Lamido Sunusi as Emir signifies a momentous shift in Kano’s traditional leadership and has been celebrated by many as a correction of past injustices.
