A 47-year-old man, Johnson Gabriel, has asked a Kaduna Customary Court to dissolve his 20-year marriage to his wife, Janet, alleging persistent domestic abuse and threats to his life.
Gabriel, who resides in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, made the request while testifying in a divorce petition before the court on Wednesday.
The petitioner alleged that his wife had become increasingly aggressive and physically abusive whenever they had disagreements.
“My ill-tempered wife beats me whenever we have a misunderstanding,” Gabriel told the court.
He further alleged that his wife had become disrespectful and no longer conducted herself as a partner in the marriage.
According to him, several attempts to resolve the problems had failed, despite interventions by family members and their children.
“I am tired of the constant abuse and threat to life; I want a divorce,” he said.
However, Janet, who was present in court, denied the allegations and accused her husband of attempting to create a justification for marrying another woman.
“My husband wants to marry another woman, and he is trying to make me look bad. Whenever he has small money, his behaviour changes toward me,” she told the court.
The presiding judge, Dauda Bala, urged the couple to consider reconciliation, particularly in the interest of their children.
The judge subsequently adjourned the case until September 20, when the court is expected to receive a report on efforts toward settlement or proceed with the hearing of the matter.
