Late Major General Opaleye (Retired) Laid to Rest in Ogun

The final rites for the late Major General Ekundayo Babakayode Opaleye were conducted on February 9, 2024, at his residence in Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

The esteemed officer, a member of Regular Course 2 commissioned on March 12, 1969, in the Nigerian Army Engineers, passed away on November 18, 2023, after a brief illness at the Federal Medical Center in Abeokuta. Major General Opaleye, who voluntarily retired in 1994, had a distinguished career, rising to the rank of Major General and serving as the Commander Corps of Engineers (CCE) and Commandant of the Nigerian Army Engineers and School.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Commander Corps of Engineers, Major General PE Eromosele, delivered the Funeral Oration. He portrayed the late officer as a devout Christian with a gentle demeanour, emphasising his brilliance, hard work, resourcefulness, discipline, and professionalism.

The COAS highlighted General Opaleye’s dedication to planning, training, and judicious resource utilisation during his tenure as CCE.

The burial ceremony attracted dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr Noimat Oyedele Salako, imembers of the State Executive Council, and senior military officers, both serving and retired. The event featured a service of songs, heartfelt tributes, and the presentation of the National Flag and kits to the Next of Kin (NOK) of the deceased.
