FG To Deploy 10,000 Electric Tricycles To Boost Transformation, Cut Costs Across Nigeria

The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out 10,000 electric tricycles as part of a major initiative aimed at easing transportation challenges and reducing the cost of mobility across the country.

According to the government, the tricycles will be distributed through the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in August 2026, with deployment beginning in the North-East and later expanding to other regions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the initiative nationwide through various regional development commissions.

He said the administration’s broader transport reform agenda is designed to shift Nigeria from a fragmented system to an integrated logistics network, linking ports, rail, roads, airports, inland waterways, and gas-powered transport infrastructure.

Shettima explained that key reforms already underway include the nationwide adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), port modernization projects, and strengthening of logistics chains to support commerce, agriculture, and industrial growth.

According to him, the goal is to reduce transportation costs, improve efficiency, and enhance productivity across all sectors of the economy.

“Our vision is an unbroken logistics chain where goods move seamlessly from ports to rail, to CNG-powered trucks, and finally to markets without delay or inefficiency,” he said.

He noted that the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative is already reducing fuel costs significantly for heavy-duty transport operators, while efforts continue to address infrastructure gaps affecting smaller vehicles.

The Vice President also highlighted ongoing maritime sector reforms, including the operationalisation of the Lekki Deep Sea Port, the National Single Window project, and renewed investment in inland waterways, all aimed at improving port efficiency and global competitiveness.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting transport workers through policies that ensure affordable energy, better financing, improved safety, and dignified working conditions.

Earlier, transport sector stakeholders expressed support for the administration’s reforms, describing them as transformative and pledging continued backing ahead of the 2027 elections.

They commended the government’s engagement with unions across road, rail, maritime, and aviation sectors, saying the reforms have restored confidence in the transport industry.

The initiative is expected to significantly expand access to affordable mobility while promoting cleaner energy adoption across Nigeria’s transport system.
