NAF Engages Igbokoda Community as Recovery Operations Continue at Crash Site

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified engagement with residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, over concerns about the potential impact of ongoing aircraft recovery operations on the community’s water source.

The Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, visited the community on the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to meet with community leaders and residents.

During the engagement, Ekwueme acknowledged the concerns raised and assured residents of the NAF’s commitment to addressing the issues through appropriate channels. He also appreciated the community for its patience and cooperation during the recovery operation.

Meanwhile, recovery efforts at the crash site are progressing despite challenging terrain and difficult underwater conditions. Multiple pumping machines have been deployed to remove water from the area surrounding the wreckage, with the aim of gaining access to the main aircraft wreckage, which remains submerged and deeply embedded in the riverbed.

The NAF said the operation requires sustained effort, specialised technical support and careful coordination to ensure that recovery personnel work safely and effectively.

The Service acknowledged the grief of the bereaved families and the concerns of Nigerians awaiting further developments, assuring that personnel remain committed to the recovery mission while upholding the safety of those involved and the dignity of the victims.

Beyond the recovery operation, the Chief of the Air Staff reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to supporting affected families throughout the difficult period.

According to the Service, applicable entitlements, including benevolent funds, scholarships for eligible children and other approved welfare benefits, will be processed. The NAF added that it remains in contact with the affected families and has established a dedicated helpline at its headquarters to facilitate access to timely and appropriate information.

The Service also acknowledged the environmental concerns raised by the Igbokoda community and pledged to maintain engagement with residents as the operation continues.

It commended the recovery personnel, community members and partner agencies for their cooperation under difficult conditions, promising to sustain recovery efforts, support bereaved families and provide verified updates on significant developments.
