The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Adamu Bello, OON, on Tuesday joined dignitaries from across 57 member nations at the Special High-Level Session on Climate-Induced Migration and the Senior Officers Meeting of the Rabat Process, held in Abuja.
The event, organised by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRIM) with support from development partners, took place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.
Speaking shortly before formally declaring the programme open, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, described climate change as an escalating global challenge that continues to threaten livelihoods and economic stability.
He noted that Nigeria has experienced significant impacts from climate change, citing the devastating 2022 floods which displaced over four million people across several states. Senator Akume called for inclusive global action and coordinated responses to address climate-related displacement and its far-reaching consequences.
The high-level gathering brought together ambassadors, representatives of development agencies and international organisations, civil society actors, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as key stakeholders in the climate and migration space. Participants examined emerging trends in climate-induced mobility and explored collaborative strategies to strengthen protection frameworks for migrants and internally displaced persons.
The forum underscored the growing link between climate change and forced migration, while reaffirming the commitment of member states to collective action under the Rabat Process to promote safe, orderly and regular migration.
