NEWMAP thumbs up on-going erosion control project in Gombe

Dr. Salisu Nasir, the National Coordinator Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has expressed satisfaction with the quality and speed of gully erosion control work at Gombe State University-Malam-Inna Kagarawal communities in Gombe.

Nasir stated this in Gombe yesterday in an interview with newsmen shortly after inspecting the ongoing erosion control projects in the areas.

He said initially the project contract duration was eighteen months, but the consultant and contractactor reduced it to seven months.

“ I am excited with the speed and quality of work I have seen, the contractor was able to achieve 75 per cent completion within five months.

“ I am optimistic that the contractor would finish the work before the onset of rainy season.

“I am more excited because the project was designed for eighteen months completion period but later on reduced to seven months by the contractor and consultant,” he said.

He said the project would bring a great relief to the menace of gullies in the affected areas.

The National coordinator said the project site was one of the biggest gullies in the country with 7.5 kilometers length which according to him would have been huge for the state government alone to handle.

He commended the state government for the timely release of counterpart funds.

Dr Husseina Goje, Commissioner Environment and Forest Resources commended Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state for releasing counterpart fund that attracted the N2.9 billion worth project.

Mal. Mohammed Garba Gombe state NEWMAP coordinator said the National coordinator was in Gombe to ascertain the progress and challenges for a way forward.(NAN)
