Nigeria-Built Humanoid Robot Omeife Showcases Africa’s Growing AI Innovation

Omeife, a six-foot-tall humanoid robot developed in Abuja by Nigerian technology company Uniccon Group, is gaining international recognition for showcasing Africa’s growing capabilities in artificial intelligence and robotics.

Led by technology entrepreneur Chuks Ekwueme, the team behind the innovation designed Omeife to communicate in eight languages — English, French, Arabic, Kiswahili, Nigerian Pidgin, Wazobia, Afrikaans and Igbo — with native-like pronunciation and accents.

Beyond multilingual communication, the humanoid robot is equipped with artificial intelligence that enables it to recognise gestures, switch languages during conversations and understand African cultural etiquette, allowing it to respond appropriately in different social settings.

Omeife also features terrain intelligence that helps it maintain balance on uneven surfaces, while precision grip sensors allow it to identify the shape and size of objects before picking them up.

The robot was unveiled at GITEX Dubai before being officially commissioned in Abuja with the support of the Nigerian government.

In addition to its robotics capabilities, the artificial intelligence powering Omeife has been integrated into a telemedicine platform designed to improve access to specialist healthcare services in underserved communities.

The project is being viewed as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s technology sector and highlights Africa’s growing contribution to global innovation in artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics.
