Nigeria has called for stronger and sustained international support for victims and survivors of terrorism, stressing that assistance should extend beyond immediate humanitarian relief to include long-term recovery and reintegration.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, made the call at the United Nations Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism in New York.
According to a statement by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, Musa highlighted the devastating impact of terrorism across Africa, noting that Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for about 60 per cent of global terrorism-related deaths in 2025.
He stressed the need for comprehensive support for survivors, including medical and psychosocial care, economic assistance and reintegration programmes to help affected individuals and communities rebuild their lives.
The Defence Minister also disclosed that Nigeria secured 865 terrorism-related convictions in 2026, reaffirming the country’s commitment to accountability and justice in the fight against terrorism.
Musa called for stronger international cooperation through peer learning, inclusive partnerships and targeted support from the United Nations to strengthen assistance for victims and survivors.
He further reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to share its experiences and lessons at the International Conference on Victims of Terrorism scheduled to take place in Baghdad later this year.
