The Federal Republic of Nigeria has joined the Government and people of the Republic of Benin in celebrating the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the enduring bonds of friendship, regional cooperation and shared commitment to peace and security between the two neighbouring countries.

The colourful anniversary celebration, held on Saturday at the iconic Amazone in Cotonou, featured impressive displays of military professionalism, discipline and cultural pride, with a Nigerian contingent invited to participate in the historic occasion.

Led by the Commander, 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, the Nigerian contingent delivered a spectacular march-past in both slow and quick time, demonstrating exceptional coordination, discipline and military precision.

The impressive performance drew enthusiastic applause from His Excellency Romuald Wadagni, President of Benin, as well as dignitaries and thousands of spectators gathered for the celebration.

A major highlight of Nigeria’s participation was a breathtaking silent drill display by the Nigerian Army, which showcased remarkable dexterity, synchronization, discipline and mastery of arms handling.

The highly coordinated performance captivated the audience and earned sustained applause from distinguished guests and spectators, further highlighting the professionalism and ceremonial excellence of the Nigerian Army.

Also present at the celebration was Her Excellency Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, Ambassador of Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, alongside the Nigerian Defence Attaché to Benin, Colonel S.A. Yahaya, senior military officers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of friendly nations.

Nigeria’s participation in the anniversary celebration further demonstrated the strong and historic relationship between the two countries, while reinforcing the importance of military diplomacy in promoting regional cooperation, peace and stability across West Africa.

The outstanding performance of the Nigerian contingent also provided an opportunity to project the discipline, professionalism and operational excellence of the Nigerian Army on an international platform.

Beyond the military display, Nigeria’s participation reflected the deep historical, cultural and people-to-people connections that have continued to unite Nigeria and Benin Republic.

The anniversary celebration therefore served not only as a commemoration of Benin’s independence but also as a powerful expression of friendship, mutual respect, regional solidarity and shared commitment to a peaceful and prosperous West Africa.
