Nigeria Moves to Strengthen Blood Transfusion System, Reviews National Blood Policy

Nigeria is set to strengthen its blood transfusion system as stakeholders move to validate a revised National Blood Policy aimed at ensuring a safer, more sustainable and readily available supply of blood and blood products across the country.

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) said the review is necessary to address emerging challenges in blood collection, processing, storage and distribution, while improving standards and coordination across the nation’s blood transfusion services.

The Director-General of the Agency, Professor Saleh Yuguda, described the validation process as a critical step towards developing a more coordinated national blood system that prioritises safety, quality and adequate availability.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening stakeholder commitment to voluntary blood donation, which remains essential to maintaining a reliable blood supply for patients in need.

The stakeholder meeting brings together experts, government institutions and development partners to critically review the revised policy and ensure that it reflects current realities, international best practices and the needs of Nigerians who require blood and blood products.

The revised policy is expected to provide a stronger framework for improving blood safety, expanding access to quality transfusion services and strengthening collaboration among relevant institutions.

The initiative underscores the Federal Government’s efforts to build a more reliable and responsive blood transfusion system capable of meeting the needs of Nigerians in hospitals and healthcare facilities nationwide.
