The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in collaboration with the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), has concluded the final phase of the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (C-WMD) Curriculum Development Workshop, aimed at enhancing the country’s preparedness against chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats.
The workshop, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on July 23, 2026, was organised for the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Command as part of efforts to institutionalise specialised training and strengthen national security.
The event brought together high-level delegations led by Major Brittany Brown for the DTRA, Mrs. Pamela West for the Office of the National Security Adviser, and Commissioner of Police Hauwa Ibrahim, who heads the Police EOD-CBRN Command.
The workshop marked the culmination of an intensive Train-the-Trainers programme designed to equip officers with the knowledge and skills required to prevent, detect, respond to and investigate threats involving weapons of mass destruction and other hazardous materials.
Declaring the workshop open on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations, DIG Umar Shehu Nadada, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the operational readiness of the Nigeria Police Force.
He noted that the evolving nature of global security threats requires proactive policing, continuous professional training, and stronger collaboration among national and international security partners.
According to him, the curriculum development programme will further enhance the Force’s ability to protect lives, secure critical national infrastructure, and strengthen Nigeria’s overall security architecture.
DIG Nadada conveyed the appreciation of the Inspector-General of Police to the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Office of the National Security Adviser for their continued support and partnership in building the Force’s specialised operational capabilities.
He also urged participants to uphold professionalism and ensure that the knowledge and expertise gained from the programme are effectively transferred across commands and formations of the Force.
In her remarks, the Commander of the Police EOD-CBRN Command, CP Hauwa Ibrahim, expressed gratitude to the DTRA and ONSA for their invaluable support in developing the specialised curriculum.
She reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to integrating the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction framework into standard police training while advocating sustained collaboration in the areas of specialised equipment procurement, technical assistance, and advanced capacity building.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to strengthening inter-agency cooperation and international partnerships as part of ongoing efforts to build a highly skilled and globally compliant police institution capable of effectively addressing emerging security threats across the country.
