Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Global Road Safety at UN High-Level Meeting
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to improving global road safety by directing the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, mni, to lead the country’s delegation to the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety at the United Nations General Assembly Headquarters in New York, United States.
The high-level meeting brought together Heads of State, ministers, policymakers and road safety experts from across the world to accelerate efforts towards achieving the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to reduce global road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50 per cent before 2030.
Representing President Tinubu during the plenary session, the Corps Marshal presented Nigeria’s national statement on the theme, “Scaling Up and Accelerating Implementation of Commitments to Halving Road Traffic Deaths and Injuries by 2030.”
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s determination to strengthen road safety governance through sustained political commitment, strategic investments, innovation and stronger international partnerships in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration.
Shehu Mohammed highlighted the significant progress recorded by Nigeria in advancing road safety, noting that the Federal Government has strengthened the operational capacity of the FRSC through institutional reforms, deployment of technology-driven enforcement systems, improved emergency response services and sustained public enlightenment campaigns aimed at reducing crashes and saving lives.
The Corps Marshal also showcased Nigeria’s growing leadership role in road safety across Africa, announcing that the country recently launched the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) in partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to improve road infrastructure safety using the globally recognised Safe System Approach.
He further noted that Nigeria hosts the Secretariat of the African Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies (AARSLA), providing a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and capacity building among African countries.
On transportation reforms, Shehu Mohammed informed delegates that Nigeria is aligning its transport sector with global sustainability goals through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles, while also developing stronger safety standards for heavy-duty vehicles and emerging transport technologies.
While acknowledging the progress achieved, the Corps Marshal stressed the need for greater international collaboration in areas including intelligent traffic enforcement technologies, safer road infrastructure, institutional capacity development and technology transfer.
He called on development partners and the international community to deepen technical cooperation and support initiatives that will accelerate the attainment of global road safety targets.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s position, Shehu Mohammed declared that road safety remains a national priority under President Tinubu’s administration and assured the global community of Nigeria’s continued commitment to working with international partners to build safer roads, save lives and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The United Nations High-Level Meeting, convened by the President of the UN General Assembly in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), is expected to adopt a Progress Declaration that will guide global actions towards reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries by half before 2030.
The meeting also reviewed progress made by countries since the 2022 Political Declaration on Road Safety and the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, held in Marrakech, Morocco, in 2025.
