Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Peace, Security, Democratic Governance in Africa
Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting peace, security, democratic governance and sustainable development across Africa through stronger collaboration with the African Union (AU).
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made the pledge during a meeting with the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, on the sidelines of the African Union Executive Council Meeting.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and the African Union in advancing peacebuilding, conflict prevention, democratic governance and regional stability across the continent.
During the engagement, Ambassador Adeoye commended Nigeria for its significant contributions to the African Union Peace and Security Council over the past 22 years, describing the country as a key driver of Africa’s peace and security agenda.
He encouraged Nigeria to sustain its leadership role within the continental body by continuing to support initiatives aimed at conflict prevention, democratic governance and institutional development.
The AU Commissioner also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen Africa’s peace and security architecture through the African Union Peace Fund, the Peace, Security and Development Nexus, and the proposed African Institute for Democratic Governance, which is expected to enhance the capacity of young African diplomats through collaboration among diplomatic academies across the continent.
Discussions further examined the evolving security situation in the Sahel, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Sudan, as well as preparations for the forthcoming Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly scheduled to hold in Angola.
Ambassador Adeoye underscored the importance of Nigeria’s active participation at the summit, noting that the country’s leadership remains critical to advancing mediation efforts, conflict prevention and regional diplomacy across Africa.
In her remarks, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the African Union and other member states to promote peace, strengthen democratic institutions, enhance regional security and foster sustainable development for the benefit of the continent.
She reiterated that Nigeria would continue to support initiatives that reinforce stability, deepen cooperation among African nations and advance the African Union’s vision of a peaceful, prosperous and integrated continent.
