Nigerian-American Teen Invents Low-Cost Air Purifier, Secures $11.5M Funding for Schools

47
A 12-year-old Nigerian-American, Eniola Shokunbi, is gaining widespread attention for her groundbreaking invention—a low-cost air purifier capable of removing 99% of viruses from the air. Eniola, a fifth-grade student at Commodore MacDonough STEM Academy in Middletown, Connecticut, was inspired to create the device after being assigned a class project to develop a solution for a future airborne pandemic similar to COVID-19. Her invention, which costs just $60 (approximately N101,000) to produce, underwent rigorous testing at the University of Connecticut, where its effectiveness was confirmed. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also tested the device and validated its air-purifying capabilities.

How It Works

Explaining the science behind her innovation, Eniola said: “The air goes through all the sides, and it comes out of the top, so it filters in and out.” She emphasized the importance of supporting scientific solutions, stating, “A lot of people don’t realize that the only thing standing between them and getting sick is science.”

Funding for Mass Production

Eniola’s invention has attracted significant attention beyond the classroom. The Connecticut State Bond Commission recently approved $11.5 million (N19.4 billion) to fund the mass production of the air purifier for schools across the state. On her website, Eniola expressed her determination to expand the project: “I played a pivotal role in securing an $11.5 million grant to fund the construction and installation of DIY air filters in schools throughout Connecticut. With this determination, I aim to expand my efforts to ensure that every classroom nationwide and around the world benefits from cleaner air.”

Viral Recognition

Eniola’s story has gone viral on social media, with platforms like X (formerly Twitter) amplifying her achievement. A post by @mymixtapez has further spotlighted the young inventor’s exceptional contribution to public health and science. Her success serves as an inspiration, showcasing how young minds can make a global impact through innovation and determination.
