Nigerian Army Arrests Suspected Criminal Gang Leader, DJ Abam, in Peva

The reported arrest of Denen Joe, popularly known as DJ Abam, has raised hopes among residents of Peva and neighbouring communities for improved security following years of alleged violence, extortion and criminal intimidation.

Abam, who has been accused of leading a violent criminal network in the area, was reportedly arrested by troops of the Nigerian Army following information provided by members of the community.

Residents have linked the suspect to several alleged criminal activities, including kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling, illegal taxation, unlawful detention, killings and the forceful seizure of residential properties and land.

According to accounts from the affected communities, Abam allegedly imposed illegal levies on residents, extorted money from locals and participated in cattle rustling and kidnapping operations.

He was also accused of handing down arbitrary judgments, detaining residents without lawful authority and collaborating with other armed groups to attack communities, burn houses and kill civilians.

Among the most serious allegations against him is the reported killing of the late Zaki Sylvester Peter Suleagbough, a respected clan head who was allegedly targeted after speaking out against criminal activities in the area.

Abam was also alleged to have worked with another suspected gang leader, Verior John Gata, in connection with the killing. However, the allegations have not been independently verified.

The suspect was further accused of involvement in the murders of Terfa Iwambe and Paul Hwakar Ayuba, as well as an alleged ambush on special forces personnel around September 2025, during which several security personnel were reportedly killed. The exact number of casualties was not specified in the accounts available.

Other allegations against Abam include the seizure of residential compounds and plots of land, collaboration with armed Fulani militants in attacks on communities, and sexual violence.

Residents further alleged that he frequently boasted about killing security personnel and acted as though he was beyond the reach of the law.

The reported activities have allegedly left many residents living in fear, with some forced to abandon their homes or surrender their property amid persistent insecurity.

Consequently, news of his arrest has generated expectations among affected communities that investigations could help establish responsibility for past crimes, facilitate the recovery of seized properties and lead to the arrest of other suspected accomplices.

The Nigerian Army continues to face the challenge of tackling armed criminal networks operating in vulnerable communities, where residents are often exposed to killings, abductions, cattle rustling and violent disputes over property.

The reported arrest of Abam could provide an opportunity for security authorities to investigate the allegations, establish his possible links to other criminal networks and determine the extent of his involvement in the incidents attributed to him.

However, the allegations against the suspect remain subject to investigation, and his arrest does not establish guilt. Any prosecution must follow due process and the applicable laws.

For residents of Peva and surrounding communities who have endured prolonged insecurity, the development represents a potential step towards restoring peace, rebuilding public confidence and reclaiming their communities from violence and intimidation.
