Nigerian Army Records Historic Milestone as Senior Commanders Complete Parachute Jumps

The Nigerian Army has recorded a significant milestone in its airborne operations following successful parachute jumps by the Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Major General Muhammed Inuwa, and the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Airborne Training School, Brigadier General MS Usman, from a moving aircraft on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

The achievement marks a moment of pride for the Army’s elite airborne community, demonstrating the commitment of senior military officers to professional training, operational proficiency and the development of specialised military capabilities.

Major General Inuwa’s successful jump is being celebrated as a historic first by an officer of his rank in the Nigerian Army, while Brigadier General Usman’s participation further highlights the service’s dedication to strengthening its airborne operations.

The participation of the two senior commanders underscores the importance of practical experience, professional competence and leadership by example in preparing personnel for specialised military assignments.

Globally, the tradition of senior military commanders participating in parachute operations has long been associated with elite airborne formations. During the Second World War, American airborne commanders, including Major Generals Matthew Ridgway and Maxwell Taylor, parachuted alongside their troops during the D-Day operations of June 6, 1944. Major General James M. Gavin was also renowned for his combat parachute jumps.

For Nigeria’s airborne community, the successful jumps by Major General Inuwa and Brigadier General Usman represent a notable achievement, reflecting the courage, discipline and technical proficiency required for airborne operations.

The milestone is also expected to inspire personnel across the Nigerian Army’s airborne formations and reinforce the importance of maintaining high professional standards in specialised military training.

For the Nigerian Army’s airborne community, October 21, 2026, will remain a memorable date, marking an achievement that celebrates professional excellence, courage and commitment to military service.
