Nigerian Military Triumphs at 36th World Military Wrestling Championship

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Nigerian Military Wrestlers showcased their prowess at the ongoing 36th World Military Wrestling Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Friday, 1st December 2023, clinching both gold and silver medals.

In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau on Saturday, Corporal Hannah Reuben, a formidable female wrestler, emerged as a shining star, securing the gold medal in the 68-weight category of women’s freestyle wrestling by defeating her Italian counterpart.

According to the statement, this historic victory marks the first time the Armed Forces of Nigeria has achieved a gold medal since participating in the CISM World Wrestling Championship. The achievement was not only a personal triumph for Cpl Reuben but also a significant milestone for the entire Nigerian wrestling team.

The medal presentation ceremony was a moment of pride for the nation as Mr. Dirk Shwede, Vice President of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), bestowed the gold medal upon Corporal Hannah Reuben. The recognition further solidified Nigeria’s presence on the global wrestling stage.

Adding to the glory, Lance Corporal Ojolaide Esther showcased a commendable performance, securing a silver medal in the 72-weight category earlier in the event.

The Chief of Defence Training and Operations, Major General Emmanuel Onumajuru, represented General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Timothy Marquis, the Director of Sports, Defence Headquarters, was also present to witness the historic achievement.

Major General Onumajuru and Air Vice Marshal Marquis acknowledged the instrumental role played by the Chief of Defence Staff in the team’s success. They expressed gratitude for his unwavering support, emphasizing that the historic victory would not have been possible without his leadership.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria wrestling team’s outstanding performance has not only set a record at the World Military Wrestling Championship but has also garnered widespread acclaim, showcasing the prowess and dedication of Nigerian military athletes on the international stage.
