The Nigeria Police Force, in partnership with the British High Commission, has concluded a two-week training programme for 55 personnel of its Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), aimed at strengthening their operational and intelligence capabilities.

The training, which ended on October 30, 2026, was organised through the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa. It was the third programme of its kind conducted in 2026, with the training series running from February to October.

The participants were drawn from various CTU bases across the Force and received training in Intelligence Analysis (IA) and Close Quarter Battle (CQB).

The programme focused on improving participants’ intelligence-gathering and analytical skills, as well as their ability to interpret and apply credible intelligence in operational decision-making. Topics covered included intelligence fundamentals, human intelligence tools, open-source intelligence, CQB principles, weapon carriage and room-clearance procedures.

Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the CTU, AIG Akoh B. Gabriel, appreciated the British High Commission for its continued support and partnership in the fight against terrorism.

He disclosed that 165 police personnel had been trained since the programme began, including officers who attended sponsored courses at the International Academy in Côte d’Ivoire.

Gabriel also revealed that the CTU, in collaboration with experts from the British High Commission, had reviewed its training programmes and conducted a training needs assessment to address emerging security threats and evolving methods used by criminal groups.

He said training programmes in 2027 would be expanded to cover tactical operations, musketry, counter-terrorism investigations, and battlefield evidence collection, preservation and chain of custody.

The AIG urged participants to apply the knowledge gained in the discharge of their duties, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach. He also charged CTU personnel to support the Force in providing adequate security for peaceful elections.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police to ensuring free, fair and credible elections through police neutrality and the provision of a safe environment for the electoral process.

Other dignitaries at the event included the representative of the British High Commission, Lieutenant Colonel Ian Tyler; the Commissioner of Police in charge of the CTU, CP Taiwo A. Adedeji, psc; and the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Unit, ACP Moses Osor, psc.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the skills, knowledge and professional capacity of its personnel to effectively carry out their constitutional responsibilities in line with international best practices.
