Pope Leo Welcomes Iran War Ceasefire, Condemns Escalating Rhetoric, Calls for Diplomatic Resolution
Pope Leo on Wednesday expressed cautious optimism over the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the ongoing Iran conflict, while reiterating his call for urgent diplomatic engagement to end hostilities in the region.
The pontiff’s remarks came just hours after he described U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning to Iran as “unacceptable,” marking a rare and unusually direct intervention by the leader of the Catholic Church in global political tensions.
The Pope, who has increasingly positioned himself as a vocal advocate for peace amid rising geopolitical friction, welcomed the temporary truce while urging world powers to pursue lasting negotiations.
“In light of these past hours of great tension for the Middle East and for the whole world, I welcome with satisfaction, the announcement of an immediate two-week truce,” Leo, the first U.S. pope, said in his weekly audience.
He emphasized that only dialogue could bring a sustainable resolution to the crisis.
“Only through a return to negotiation can an end to the war be achieved,” he said.

In recent weeks, Pope Leo has steadily intensified his public appeals for restraint in the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, breaking from his traditionally measured tone on international affairs.
Tensions escalated further after President Trump warned Iran on Tuesday that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if the country did not meet U.S demands for a truce. Responding to the statement, the Pope told journalists that the threat was “truly unacceptable”.
Such direct commentary from the Pope on a sitting world leader remains uncommon, given his role as spiritual head of approximately 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
Nevertheless, his recent interventions underscore a growing urgency from the Vatican for global powers to de-escalate conflicts and prioritize diplomacy over military confrontation.
As the ceasefire takes effect, attention now shifts to whether international stakeholders will seize the opportunity to transform the fragile pause in hostilities into a durable peace process.
