President Bola Tinubu hosted President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal at the State House on Thursday, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts within West Africa to tackle pressing issues such as terrorism, human trafficking, and poverty.

During their meeting, President Tinubu stressed the importance of aligning the region’s goals and structures to effectively combat these multifaceted challenges. He urged leaders to prioritize the well-being of their citizens and uphold democratic values and institutions.

“Democratic governance, democratic values, and constitutional order are sacrosanct and must be protected,” President Tinubu emphasized, highlighting the pivotal role of institutions like the judiciary and the rule of law in sustaining democracy.

Acknowledging Nigeria and Senegal’s historical ties, President Tinubu described them as brotherly nations with a shared commitment to democracy. He underscored the importance of collaboration in promoting democratic governance and addressing common societal issues.

“As the Chairman of ECOWAS, I am inviting you to collaborate and meet those other brothers. To persuade them to come back to the fold,” President Tinubu urged, calling for unity among member states to tackle regional challenges effectively.

In response, President Faye echoed sentiments of mutual respect and cooperation between Nigeria and Senegal, dating back to the 1960s. He called for the revitalization of bilateral relations through initiatives like the Nigeria-Senegal joint commission, emphasizing the potential for diplomatic, trade, and other exchanges.

Speaking on ECOWAS, President Faye expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and vision for the advancement of the regional bloc. He emphasized the importance of unity in confronting shared challenges and promoting economic prosperity for the benefit of all member states.

“United, we are stronger. Faced with common challenges, we need to show resolve to confront these challenges so that economically we can thrive and satisfy the wishes of our people,” President Faye remarked, underscoring the need for collective action to address issues like human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
