President Tinubu Confirms Adepoju as NIS Comptroller General
In a recent development, President Bola Tinubu has officially confirmed the appointment of Wura-Ola Adepoju as the substantive Comptroller General (CG) of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
Adepoju, who has been acting in the capacity since May 29, 2023, shared this news with NIS staff during the Comptroller General’s parade on Wednesday.
Adepoju expressed her gratitude, stating, “You may also wish to know that through the grace of God and by the benevolence of the present government, I have been confirmed as a substantive Comptroller General of Immigration,” as reported by the Public Relations Unit of the Service.
The newly appointed CG also announced the promotion of several members of the top management team to the ranks of Deputy Comptroller General, with the date of their decoration to be disclosed soon.
During the ceremony, Adepoju paid tribute to service members who recently lost their lives in the line of duty, offering prayers for their souls and revealing the establishment of an Endowment Fund by the Service for the families of the deceased. The fund is being supported by donations from the NIS management team, Command Comptrollers, and stakeholders. The widows of the deceased are being considered for employment in the Service, provided they meet the required qualifications.
Adepoju urged all officers and staff of the NIS to maintain the highest level of dedication and professionalism. She called on Nigerians to renew their passports six months before expiration, cautioning against patronizing touts. The CG also announced plans to introduce a paperless passport application system, allowing applicants to apply from the comfort of their homes.
Addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians abroad, Adepoju shared plans to expand service points abroad to alleviate pressure, especially due to the “japa syndrome.” With the festive period approaching, she assured assistance to Nigerians from the diaspora with expired passports, setting up dedicated service points for their convenience.
Adepoju encouraged adults to apply for the 64-page, 10-year-valid passport to minimize the need for frequent renewals, demonstrating the NIS’s commitment to enhancing passport services for the public.
