Real Warri Pikin: “Women Are Called Bossy for Standing Their Ground, While Men Are Called Strong”

Nigerian comedian and actress Anita Alaire Afoke Asuoha, popularly known as Real Warri Pikin, has sparked an important conversation about the different ways society often interprets assertiveness in men and women.

In a message shared with her audience, Real Warri Pikin highlighted what she described as a double standard in how people react when men and women stand firm, set boundaries or refuse to compromise their values.

She noted that when a woman stands her ground, she is often labelled “mean, aggressive, difficult or bossy,” while a man displaying the same behaviour may be described as “resilient, strong, a leader or someone with boundaries.”

“Same action. Different language. Different reception,” she wrote.

According to her, the disparity is rooted in societal expectations that women should always be soft, agreeable and accommodating.

She argued that women are sometimes judged negatively the moment they choose themselves, establish boundaries or simply say “no.”

“The moment we choose ourselves, set boundaries, or say NO — boom! It gets labelled as attitude,” she said.

Real Warri Pikin stressed that qualities such as resilience, confidence and self-respect should not be defined by gender.

She maintained that setting boundaries does not make a woman difficult or disrespectful, but can instead be an expression of self-respect and clarity.

Her message has resonated with the broader conversation about gender expectations, encouraging women to remain confident in their decisions without allowing negative labels to undermine their self-worth.

“You’re not mean for standing your ground. You’re clear. And clarity makes some people uncomfortable,” she concluded.
