Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to youth empowerment through targeted initiatives in financial inclusion, skills development, job creation, and peacebuilding efforts across the country.
He made this known on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while receiving a delegation from the United Nations led by the Assistant Secretary-General on Youth Affairs, Dr. Felipe Paullier, on a courtesy visit.
Senator Shettima said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu views young Nigerians as a critical force for national transformation, stressing that they must not be treated merely as statistical figures but as active drivers of change and development.
He noted that the government remains committed to strengthening collaboration with the United Nations and other international partners to expand opportunities for youth and women empowerment nationwide.
According to him, “they are the pillar of the moment upon whom the future of the nation rests,” adding that the Tinubu administration is determined to convert Nigeria’s growing youth population into a demographic dividend through structured policies and programmes.
The Vice President also emphasized the need for institutional mechanisms to support youth and women-focused initiatives in partnership with relevant global stakeholders, including the United Nations system.
On gender inclusion, Shettima reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to gender equality and youth development, describing young people as the backbone of societal transformation.
Earlier, Dr. Felipe Paullier expressed appreciation for the engagement, noting that Nigeria remains a key global player in youth development due to its large and dynamic youth population.
He explained that the United Nations continues to expand its support for young people worldwide through initiatives focused on human rights protection, skills acquisition, training, and employment opportunities.
Dr. Paullier added that Nigeria’s developmental trajectory remains promising, stressing that prioritizing youth in governance and decision-making would accelerate innovation, growth, and national progress.
He further underscored the importance of gender equality and improved access to education and employment as essential components of effective youth development.
The visit highlighted ongoing efforts by both the Federal Government and the United Nations to strengthen cooperation in advancing youth-centered development policies in Nigeria.
