Super Eagles’ World Cup Record Under Threat Ahead of 2026 Tournament

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be watching closely as the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11, with concerns that their long-standing African record could be surpassed.

Although Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament, which will be hosted across United States, Canada, and Mexico, the three-time African champions still hold the record for the most World Cup match wins by an African nation.

Since making their debut in 1994, Nigeria has recorded six victories at the global tournament—more than any other team from the continent. Their first appearance saw wins over Bulgaria and Greece, a feat they repeated in 1998 with victories against Spain and Bulgaria.

The team added a fifth win in 2014 after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina, before exiting in the round of 16. However, Nigeria has since struggled to build on that record, missing out on the 2022 and 2026 editions.

With nine African nations set to participate in the expanded 2026 tournament, attention has turned to teams capable of overtaking Nigeria’s tally.

Morocco national football team, Ghana national football team, and Senegal national football team are all within reach, each having recorded five World Cup wins.

Morocco, in particular, is seen as a strong contender after its historic semi-final run at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Senegal and Ghana also remain in contention, though both face challenging group-stage opponents.

As the tournament approaches, the Super Eagles’ record stands as a benchmark of African achievement on football’s biggest stage—but one that may soon be tested.
