Super Falcons Defeat Senegal 2-1 in WAFCON Preparatory Friendly

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, began preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on a winning note with a 2-1 victory over Senegal on Friday.

The international friendly, played at the Remo Stars Stadium, saw Nigeria produce a dominant display to secure the win against Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses.

Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring in the 32nd minute from the penalty spot, marking a successful return to the national team following her last appearance in the WAFCON 2024 final.

The Super Falcons continued to dictate play and control possession throughout much of the first half, creating several attacking opportunities.

Their dominance was rewarded again in the 43rd minute when Toni Payne finished off a well-worked team move to double Nigeria’s advantage. Like Oshoala, Payne was making her first appearance for the team since the WAFCON 2024 finals.

Nigeria maintained control for most of the encounter, limiting Senegal’s attacking threat and setting the pace of the game.

The visitors pulled a goal back in the 86th minute, creating a tense finish, but the Super Falcons remained composed and successfully protected their lead until the final whistle.

The match marked the first-ever meeting between the Super Falcons and Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses.

Both teams are using the friendly fixtures as part of preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to take place in Morocco.

The two sides are expected to face each other again in a second friendly match at the same venue on Monday as they continue their build-up to the continental tournament.

Nigeria will be aiming to defend its WAFCON crown when the competition gets underway in Morocco. (NAN)
