Tinubu Appoints Babalola as Special Adviser on Power, Sets Up Task Force for Sector Reset

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Rilwan Lanre Babalola as Special Adviser on Power and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power Sector Reset and Restoration.

The appointment is part of renewed efforts by the Federal Government to address longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector and deliver improved power supply nationwide.

In a related development, the President also approved the redesignation of the Office of the Special Adviser (Energy) to Special Adviser (Oil & Gas), a move aimed at clarifying roles and preventing overlap within the country’s energy governance structure.

Babalola, a former Minister of Power, is expected to leverage his extensive experience and deep understanding of the sector to drive reforms. His appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to a decisive and results-oriented overhaul of the power sector.

The newly established Presidential Task Force will operate under a direct mandate from the President, serving as a high-level implementation body focused on restoring efficiency, discipline, and commercial viability across the electricity value chain.

According to the directive, the Task Force will spearhead a comprehensive reset of the power system, anchored on a “Performance Before Expansion” framework. Key priorities include reducing technical and commercial losses, improving revenue collection, enhancing liquidity, and strengthening overall market discipline.

The Task Force is also expected to promote productive use of electricity across key sectors, develop Electricity Growth Zones, and implement measures to reduce fiscal exposure in the sector.

Additionally, it will deliver a 90-day implementation blueprint designed to fast-track reforms and ensure measurable outcomes.

President Tinubu charged the new Special Adviser to bring urgency, discipline, and strong execution to the role, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at achieving sustainable improvements in power supply and sector performance.
