The national honour, one of Nigeria’s highest, was awarded in recognition of Gates’ longstanding commitment to global health, development, and his support for Nigeria’s healthcare reform efforts.

The ceremony, held in Lagos on Tuesday, was a highlight of Gates’ official visit to Nigeria. President Tinubu, while presenting the award, praised Gates for his tireless dedication to humanity through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“Bill Gates’ commitment to global health and innovation has transformed countless lives across Africa and the world. Today, we celebrate his dedication to improving the human condition,” Tinubu stated.

Gates, visibly moved by the recognition, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government and reiterated his Foundation’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Nigerian leaders, scientists, and health institutions.

“Nigeria’s efforts to reform primary healthcare are inspiring,” Gates said. “We are excited to work more closely with local leaders to build resilient health systems and support innovation that can change lives.”

The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including Africa’s richest man and longtime Gates Foundation collaborator, Aliko Dangote. Dangote’s presence at the ceremony underlined the significance of public-private partnerships in addressing Africa’s pressing development challenges.

Gates’ honour comes on the heels of the Foundation’s announcement of a $200 billion investment over the next two decades to tackle global health and development issues. A substantial portion of that commitment is expected to support health systems in Africa, including Nigeria’s national strategy on artificial intelligence, vaccine development, and maternal and child health.

As part of his itinerary, Gates is expected to speak at the Goalkeepers Nigeria forum—an event focused on Africa’s innovation potential—and to meet with young Nigerian scientists and health entrepreneurs. The Gates Foundation recently opened a Nigeria office to expand its footprint on the continent, joining regional hubs in Kenya, South Africa, and Senegal.

From Lagos, Gates will continue to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, reaffirming his foundation’s strategic engagement across Africa.

This national honour not only underscores Gates’ philanthropic legacy in Nigeria but also symbolizes a broader vision of collaboration between Nigeria and global partners to achieve sustainable development goals.
