Tinubu Hale, Hearty, Working From Abroad, Says Presidency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is hale and hearty and has continued to discharge his official responsibilities while on a working vacation, according to a statement defending the President’s absence from Abuja.

The statement noted that in the digital age, the President does not necessarily need to be physically present in Abuja to carry out official duties, adding that Tinubu has remained engaged in government and economic activities during his time abroad.

It cited the President’s meetings with investors in France, including recent efforts that facilitated a $7 billion deep-sea port project in Ogun Waterside, an initiative of the Ogun State Government.

The statement also noted that Tinubu was not the only African leader absent from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, pointing out that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also did not attend the gathering in person.

According to the statement, Ramaphosa had stepped back from public engagements, while President Tinubu had earlier announced his annual vacation and delegated Nigeria’s representation at the UN General Assembly to Vice President Kashim Shettima.

It criticised former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for questioning the President’s whereabouts, describing the comments as unnecessary.

The statement said President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria this week to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

It added that the President would also honour the late Chief MKO Abiola by attending the Lagos premiere of a movie commemorating the former politician and businessman, whom the statement described as a martyr of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
