President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on African armed forces to strengthen alliances and collaborate against security threats to ensure the safety of the continent. The President made this appeal at the opening ceremony of the second edition of the African Military Games, held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja. The event, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation Through Sports in Africa,” was a significant display of unity and strength among military personnel across the continent.
Represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu emphasized that the games are more than a display of athleticism. He described the event as a symbol of the unity and cooperation binding African military institutions, serving as a testament to the collective spirit and shared purpose of the continent.
“This gathering transcends competition. It is a reminder of the enduring bonds that unite us as Africans. These games are a memory of change and a testament to the spirit of unity that defines our shared purpose,” Shettima said.
The Vice President commended the Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OMSA), Major General Maikano Abdullahi, for their visionary leadership and dedication in organizing the event. He highlighted the critical role of sports in maintaining the physical fitness of military personnel, which is vital in addressing the continent’s current security challenges.
“The Nigerian armed forces, under their current leadership, have demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, discipline, loyalty, and dedication in executing their duties. This competition highlights the importance of maintaining peak physical and mental fitness to tackle the challenges we face,” Shettima added.
In his remarks, General Christopher Musa outlined the goals of the African Military Games, emphasizing its role in fostering unity, cooperation, and understanding among the armed forces across Africa.
“This event serves not only as a platform for competition but also as an opportunity to strengthen the ties that bind us together as a continent,” General Musa stated.
The African Military Games features 19 sports events, with over 1,775 participants from 25 countries, including Tunisia, Uganda, Senegal, the Republic of Congo, Mali, Libya, South Africa, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, Ethiopia, and Cameroon.
The games underscore the significance of military collaboration in addressing shared challenges and enhancing security. Participants and spectators alike see the event as a symbol of resilience and a step towards a more united and secure Africa.
