In a major counter-terrorism operation on Saturday, July 20, 2024, Nigerian Army troops successfully dislodged and destroyed a terrorist camp belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
This was signed by the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
“The operation, which took place in the Ezere Forest of Umuawa Aku, Okigwe Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State, and extended into Akawa Nnneato and Lomara communities in Umunneochi LGA of Abia State, led to the capture of a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and other significant items.

He said that the troop, acting on credible intelligence about the harassment and intimidation of local residents by the terrorist elements, swiftly mobilised to neutralise the threat.
“Upon arrival, they engaged the terrorists in a fierce shootout, successfully dislodging them from their camp.
General Nwachukwu said that the troops continued their assault, pursuing the fleeing terrorists and forcing them to abandon a significant cache of arms, including one GPMG, assorted rounds of ammunition, two motorcycles, and two communication radios.

“This operation underscores the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region. The troops demonstrated decisiveness in dismantling the terrorist threat, ensuring the safety of the local communities.
