Wife of Taraba State Governor laments increase in Gender-based Violence

The wife of Taraba State Governor, Anna Darius Ishaku has urged Chairmen of the local government councils in the state to take the campaign against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to the grassroots.

The Governor’s wife lamented the recent increase in GBV in the state and the country as a whole.

Anna Ishaku stated this during a campaign and an Advocacy visit on GBV in Zing Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

She said it is the responsibility of all to join the fight against the menace which is now a pandemic.

The Governor’s wife recommended the setting up of a committee to coordinate and manage the fight against GBV. She also called for funding and the involvement of all to support the campaign.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen LGA in Northern zone of the state, Mr Andrew Luka, stated that GBV is a global pandemic that has deep-rooted in gender inequality.

The Chairman described GBV as an act violate fundamental human rights and the monster is the least prosecuted crimes.

The chairman assured of the readiness of the LGA Chairmen to actively support and partake in the campaign and equally extend same to the grassroots.

On her part, the representative of International Federation of women lawyers (FIDA) Comfort Yibuyen revealed that verbal, emotional, physical, psychological and sexual assault are the most common GBV cases in the region.

She stated that the implications of GBV are unwanted pregnancy, suicidal attempts, emotional, loss of self-esteem among other hostile effects.
