Wike Orders Immediate Evacuation, Demolition of Illegal Settlement in Abuja
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate evacuation and demolition of an illegal settlement in the Kukwaba District, near Karmajiji, Abuja, describing the area as a serious security threat.
Wike gave the directive on Friday following an inspection of the settlement after an FCT security meeting, where he expressed concern over the proliferation of shanties and their potential use as hideouts by criminal elements.
The Minister described the settlement as a “time bomb waiting to explode”, stressing that its location within the city centre posed significant security concerns.
According to him, criminal elements could use the settlement to conceal themselves after carrying out attacks, making it difficult for security agencies to identify and track them.
He said the FCT Administration could not allow illegal structures to exist in locations where they could undermine the safety and security of residents.
Wike consequently directed the FCT Commissioner of Police and the Director of Development Control to commence the clearance of the area without delay.
The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the FCT Administration to protecting residents and maintaining a secure and orderly capital city, warning that illegal structures that provide potential safe havens for criminal activities would not be tolerated.
The directive forms part of ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration and security agencies to identify and eliminate potential security threats across the nation’s capital.
