AWCN Course 8/2024 Visits Key Military and Defence Establishments in Abuja
As part of their strategic learning, the participants of Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) Course 8/2024 visited key military and defence establishments in Abuja on 5 and 6 March 2024.
The two-day tour, led by the Commandant AWCN, Major General Ishaya Maina, was a vital part of the National Security and Organisation of Defence Module, which aimed to provide the participants with useful insights and practical exposure to the operations of important military strategic establishments in the country.
The tour began at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Joint Operation Centre, where the participants had a detailed and informative experience at the Centre. The visit to the centre enabled the participants to learn firsthand how different branches of the armed forces coordinate and cooperate when planning and executing joint operations. The participants also got a chance to see the smooth coordination and synergy among the various branches of the armed forces.
The visit to DHQ also allowed the participants to see how decisions are made at the highest level of strategic command. They learned how military leaders gather intelligence, evaluate threats, and devise comprehensive plans that involve the joint efforts of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other security agencies. This is essential for military leaders, especially in the face of modern security threats that often demand a complex and coordinated response.
The team also visited the Nigerian Army Operation Centre, where they explored the Army’s operational planning and command structure. The tour also included visits to the Naval Headquarters and Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, where the participants observed the capabilities and operational strategies of the Nigerian Navy and Air Force in protecting the nation’s maritime and air domains.
At the Defence Space Administration and Defence Research and Development Bureau, where they learned about the crucial role of technology and research in improving the country’s defence capabilities.
Other notable visits were to the Defence Intelligence Agency, which highlighted the comprehensive nature of the exploration into various aspects of the nation’s defence system.
The tour was a valuable experience for the 75 participants, who were Colonels, Lieutenant Colonels, and their equivalents from the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The participants comprised 65 from the Nigerian Army, two from the Nigerian Navy, and two from the Nigerian Air Force. This also include six participants from allied nations, with one each from Congo Brazzaville, Cote D’Ivore, Liberia, Eswatini, and Togo, while Cameroon had two participants.
The participants were accompanied by the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies Brigadier General Aminu Umar, Directors, and members of the Faculty. The tour ended with the exchange of souvenirs and the taking of group photographs at each visited establishment.
