Canada Reaffirms Commitment to Bilateral Ties with Nigeria – Tuggar

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, embarked on a working visit to Canada on May 10, 2024, to bolster bilateral relations between the two countries. During his discussions with various stakeholders, Tuggar emphasised Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening economic and diplomatic ties with Canada.

In a meeting with the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, Tuggar underscored Nigeria’s position as Canada’s largest trade partner in Africa. Both ministers emphasised the importance of enhancing trade relations, particularly in light of the ongoing implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Minister Joly reiterated Canada’s commitment to supporting socioeconomic development in Nigeria and the wider region, highlighting the mutual benefits of cooperation between the two nations.

The discussions also delved into regional security in Africa, with Minister Joly commending Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting stability and democracy in West Africa. Both countries pledged to collaborate on addressing regional and global challenges, including conflict resolution and countering disinformation.

Tuggar also engaged with the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association (CAAF) to explore avenues for deeper cooperation on regional African issues and multilateral reform. Additionally, meetings with Canadian parliamentary officials and business leaders focused on opportunities for enhanced partnership in various sectors, including education, healthcare, trade, and investment.

The visit also included discussions with senior leadership at Carleton University, highlighting existing educational collaborations between Nigerian and Canadian institutions. Tuggar’s meeting with the Business Council of Canada (BCC) and the Canadian Parliamentary Secretary on Export Promotion further explored avenues for expanding trade relations, particularly in renewable energy, infrastructure, and technology.

Overall, Tuggar’s visit to Canada signifies a significant step forward in strengthening the longstanding and multifaceted relationship between Nigeria and Canada, with a focus on promoting mutual prosperity and cooperation across various sectors.
