By Matthew Eloyi

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, inaugurated a 70,000-litre, solar-powered water project on Monday in Alesi, Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River.

This project, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), is part of a Special Intervention Civil-Military Cooperation scheme initiated by the COAS and executed by Maj.-Gen. Hilary Nzan, Commander of the Four Special Forces Command, Doma, Nasarawa. The initiative aims to enhance the relationship between the army and local communities through people-focused projects.

Previously, the Nigerian Army had installed solar-powered street lights in the same community.

Represented by Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja explained that the water project was designed to support existing infrastructure provided by the government and other stakeholders.

“This project will help to improve the people’s health, sanitation, and overall quality of life,” he noted.

Lagbaja highlighted the army’s ongoing commitment to community welfare through various projects nationwide, including the construction and rehabilitation of hospitals, schools, laboratories, roads, town halls, and borehole facilities.

Maj.-Gen. Nzan added that the decision to implement a water project followed thorough consultations with the Alesi community. He encouraged residents to maintain the new infrastructure to ensure its longevity.

Dr. Odigha Odigha, a community leader, praised the project, describing it as a significant benefit to Alesi. “This project is a huge relief to the community, it would help in the reduction of waterborne diseases such as cholera. It will also reduce the burden of long treks to the stream,” he said.

He commended the Nigerian Army for its impactful interventions, noting that such initiatives have strengthened the bond between the community and the military.

The inauguration ceremony featured traditional dances and the conferment of the traditional title “The Leader of People” on the COAS.
