The training, which took place at the main clinic of Yundum Barracks, ended with a closing ceremony on Friday, 9 January 2026. It was initiated by the Chief Medical Officer of the GAF, Colonel Dr Musa Kah, in line with the 2026 training directives issued by the Chief of Defence Staff.

The programme was designed to enhance the professional capacity of military medics to provide improved healthcare services to personnel of the Gambia Armed Forces, their families, and members of the civilian population who access military medical facilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Colonel Dr Kah expressed appreciation to the participants for their dedication and discipline throughout the training. He also commended the training coordinator, Major Richard Correa, and his team for the effective organisation and smooth execution of the programme.

The Chief Medical Officer play a  vital role of medical personnel as frontline caregivers, noting that medics often serve as the first point of medical support for troops, including in combat environments. He stressed the need for the GAF Medical Services to expand beyond routine primary healthcare and develop into a self-reliant and sustainable institution capable of reducing dependence on external support.

Colonel Dr Kah urged State Enrolled Nurses (SEN) and State Registered Nurses (SRN) to pursue higher academic qualifications, describing continuous professional development as essential for career growth, improved service delivery, and enhanced quality of life. He cautioned against complacency, stating that progress and excellence must remain central to the ethos of the medical service.

He further emphasized that qualified SRNs are expected to mentor and train junior medics, leveraging their professional expertise to raise overall standards within the unit. Participants were also encouraged to specialise in specific medical fields and strive for academic excellence to better prepare for future challenges in military healthcare.

The training forms part of GAF’s broader commitment to strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring quality medical support for both military operations and community healthcare needs.
