The Federal Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the welfare, operational readiness and overall effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) as the military on Tuesday night hosted the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Regimental Dinner Night at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, Abuja.

The ceremony, held in an atmosphere of solemn remembrance, military tradition and camaraderie, brought together senior military officers, government officials and stakeholders to honour fallen heroes and celebrate the professionalism and excellence of serving personnel.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR (Rtd), described the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as far more than a ceremonial occasion, saying it represents the very heartbeat of Nigeria’s military heritage.

According to him, the event provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the courage, resilience and professionalism of Nigerian troops, while paying tribute to fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation’s sovereignty.

He noted that Nigerian troops continue to confront complex asymmetric threats with courage and professionalism, often under extremely demanding conditions, adding that the peace and security enjoyed across the country are products of their vigilance, sacrifice and unwavering dedication.

The Defence Minister paid glowing tribute to fallen officers and soldiers, saying their names are etched not only on monuments but also in the fabric of Nigeria’s national consciousness. He also commended the families of the fallen, describing them as silent pillars of national sacrifice whose courage and resilience continue to inspire the nation.

General Musa reassured serving personnel of the Federal Government’s determination to improve troop welfare, logistics and operational capacity, stressing that President Tinubu remains resolute in ensuring that the Armed Forces are adequately equipped, motivated and supported to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, described the Regimental Dinner Night as one of the Armed Forces’ most cherished traditions, blending solemn remembrance with fellowship, discipline and pride in the profession of arms.

He commended Nigerian troops for their gallantry and sacrifices across various theatres of operation, noting that their professionalism has continued to strengthen civil-military relations and restore public confidence in the Armed Forces.

The CDS also acknowledged the vital role played by military families, saying their unwavering support remains a cornerstone of operational effectiveness and morale among troops.

General Oluyede further emphasized the importance of a whole-of-society approach to national security, calling for sustained collaboration between the military, other security agencies and local communities in the fight against terrorism and other threats to peace and democracy.

The highlight of the evening included the presentation of medals and awards to deserving senior officers in recognition of their exceptional leadership, gallantry, meritorious service and outstanding contributions to the defence and security of the nation.

The event once again underscored Nigeria’s collective resolve to honour its fallen heroes, celebrate the dedication of its service men and women, and strengthen the Armed Forces in the defence of the nation.
