Medical experts are cautioning the public that everyday hand-to-nose contact may play a significant role in the spread of pneumonia-causing bacteria, challenging the widespread belief that the illness is transmitted only through the air.

According to doctors, habits such as nose picking or frequent rubbing of the nose can introduce Streptococcus pneumoniae—a major cause of pneumonia—directly into the nasal passages. Once established in the nose, the bacteria can multiply and, in some cases, migrate to the lungs, leading to serious respiratory infections.
Health specialists explain that while airborne transmission remains a key concern, direct contact is an equally important route of infection. Studies indicate that even brief contact with contaminated hands, especially when the nose is moist, can allow bacteria to colonize the body.
Medical professionals are therefore emphasizing the importance of regular handwashing, proper hand hygiene, and using tissues instead of fingers to manage nasal irritation. They stress that simple preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
The warning serves as a reminder that hands can act as “vehicles” for disease transmission and that maintaining good hygiene remains one of the most effective defenses against common but potentially dangerous infections like pneumonia.
