Alleged “Free Rent” Horror Story Emerges as Tenant Claims Landlord Traded Destinies for Spiritual Gain

A personal story shared online has triggered intense reactions across social media after a tenant alleged that her landlord secretly used spiritual practices in exchange for years of unpaid rent, a claim that has fueled debate, fear, and skepticism among readers.

The account, shared by a woman identified as Ella, described her experience living in an apartment compound where tenants reportedly paid no rent for nearly five years. According to her narrative, the landlord—known to residents as Baba Awani—appeared unusually generous, repeatedly refusing rent payments and instead requesting small traditional items such as schnapps and kola nuts, which he said were for prayers.

Ella said the landlord’s demeanor earned him admiration among tenants, who nicknamed him “God’s envoy,” believing his kindness was a blessing during difficult economic times.

However, she claimed that shortly after rent payments stopped, a series of misfortunes began affecting residents of the compound. Ella alleged that she and her roommates lost their banking jobs and struggled to secure new employment. She further stated that her engagement collapsed, while other tenants experienced broken relationships, unexplained illnesses, deaths, or sudden displacements.

According to the account, one former tenant identified as Mama Sounadine, who once owned a clothing business, is now reportedly begging for food. Ella claimed that despite these hardships, tenants continued living under what appeared to be rent-free conditions.

The situation allegedly took a dramatic turn when the landlord traveled to his village for a festival and mistakenly left a side door unlocked. Ella said the door led to a room Baba Awani had always referred to as a “Prayer Hall,” warning tenants never to enter.

Driven by fear and curiosity, Ella claimed she and other tenants entered the room at night and discovered what she described as red candles arranged in a circle around clay dolls bearing the names of tenants in the compound. She alleged that some dolls were bound or damaged, corresponding to misfortunes experienced by the individuals named.

Ella further claimed that at the center of the room was a calabash filled with new currency notes, which she interpreted as evidence that their unpaid rent had come at a heavy personal cost. She also alleged experiencing a frightening encounter involving a black cat and hearing a warning voice, prompting the tenants to flee the compound immediately.

The account concluded with Ella stating that she received a phone call shortly after escaping, which she claimed was from the landlord, accompanied by the words: “He knows.”

The story has since gone viral, generating widespread reactions ranging from fear and sympathy to skepticism and calls for verification. There has been no independent confirmation of the claims, and no official complaint or police report has been publicly linked to the allegations.

Social commentators and experts have urged readers to approach the account with caution, noting the lack of corroborating evidence and the prevalence of fictional or exaggerated narratives online. Nonetheless, the story has reignited discussions around tenant vulnerability, superstition, and the psychological impact of unexplained hardship.

As of now, the claims remain unverified, and the identity of those involved has not been independently confirmed.
