With Europe and North America permanently shutting down nearly 800,000 barrels per day of refining capacity, global markets are turning to large, late-cycle mega-refineries to bridge the supply gap. In this context, the Dangote Refinery is becoming a critical asset.
Currently operating at about 650,000 barrels per day, the refinery is expected, once fully stabilized, to produce up to 300,000 barrels per day of gasoline, 150,000 barrels per day of gasoil, and 140,000 barrels per day of jet fuel. These volumes are projected to significantly ease pressure on global fuel markets already strained by capacity closures and rising demand.
Although the facility has experienced recent technical challenges at its core conversion unit, expansion plans remain firmly on track. The refinery aims to double its output to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next three years, a development that could position it as the world’s largest single-train refinery.
Managed by Engineers India Limited, the project is widely viewed as a stabilizing force in global fuel supply chains. Beyond its international impact, the refinery is also regarded as a transformative industrial asset for Nigeria, with the potential to boost energy security, reduce fuel imports, and strengthen the country’s role in global energy markets.
As global refining capacity continues to shrink, Dangote’s Lagos refinery is fast emerging as a pivotal player in shaping the future of fuel supply across Africa and beyond.
