Kemi Badenoch Criticises UK Stance on UN Slavery Reparations Resolution

Leader of the UK Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has criticised the British government for abstaining from a United Nations resolution that described slavery as the greatest crime against humanity and called for reparations from former colonial powers.

The United Kingdom, alongside 51 other mostly European countries, abstained from the vote on the resolution introduced by Ghana. The measure urges the establishment of a global reparations fund and calls on nations to acknowledge and apologise for their roles in the transatlantic slave trade.

Reacting in a post on X, Badenoch questioned why the administration of Prime Minister Keir Starmer did not vote against the resolution. She warned that supporting such a measure could potentially expose the UK to significant financial liabilities.

Badenoch argued that Britain should not be held responsible for reparations, maintaining that the country played a leading role in ending slavery.

The resolution has sparked renewed global debate on historical accountability, reparations, and the legacy of colonialism, with differing views among countries on how best to address the enduring impact of the transatlantic slave trade.
