Nigeria Hosts Landmark Data Protection Summit, Leads Push for Digital Sovereignty in Africa

Nigeria is taking a decisive step in shaping Africa’s digital future as the Nigeria Data Protection Commission hosts a high-level international peer exchange in Abuja, bringing together data protection authorities from across the continent.

The event, led by the Commission’s National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has attracted delegations from nine African countries, including The Gambia, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Zambia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Liberia, and Somalia.

The summit is aimed at adopting what stakeholders describe as the “Nigerian Model” of data regulation, positioning the country as a continental leader in digital governance.

Officials say the initiative represents a major step toward harmonising data protection laws across Africa, creating a unified framework that will enhance cross-border digital trade, safeguard personal information, and boost investor confidence.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Olatunji emphasised that data protection is no longer just a regulatory obligation but a strategic asset for national development.

“Compliance is not about avoiding fines; it is about protecting our nation’s reputation and building trust in the digital economy,” he said.

Backed by global partners such as the World Bank and Smart Africa, the initiative is also expected to position Nigeria as a hub for training Data Protection Officers (DPOs), creating employment opportunities and strengthening technical capacity across the continent.

Experts note that as data increasingly drives global economies, Nigeria’s leadership in this space signals a shift from being a passive consumer of technology to an active regulator and innovator.

The development aligns with the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at leveraging data governance to drive economic growth, enhance security, and promote digital sovereignty.

With Africa’s digital economy expanding rapidly, stakeholders say the outcomes of the Abuja summit could redefine how data is managed, protected, and monetised across the continent.
