Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled a coordinated attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on the Headquarters of 27 Brigade and the Buni Gari Checkpoint in Buni Gari, neutralising more than 50 insurgents during the operation.
According to military authorities, the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 8 May 2026, when a large number of terrorists launched assaults from multiple directions under the cover of darkness.
The troops reportedly responded with heavy firepower and tactical resistance, preventing the insurgents from breaching the military location.
Military sources said the terrorists first attacked from the western flank before reinforcing from the southern and south-western axes in what appeared to be an attempt to surround the troops. However, the soldiers maintained their positions and executed coordinated offensive and defensive operations that disrupted the assault.
The military disclosed that at least 10 terrorist bodies were recovered within the immediate area of the encounter, while intelligence reports indicated that several other insurgents were killed along withdrawal routes around Gashua, Azare, and Kamuya.
The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI also played a major role in the operation by providing Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance support, as well as conducting precision airstrikes on identified terrorist positions and fleeing fighters.
According to the military, the airstrikes accounted for additional casualties among the insurgents as aircraft pursued retreating elements along escape corridors.
Recovered items from the scene included eight AK-47 rifles, two General Purpose Machine Guns, two Rocket-Propelled Grenade tubes, RPG bombs and chargers, ammunition, loaded magazines, bandoliers, and three Improvised Explosive Device canisters.
Troops, supported by volunteer forces, are currently conducting follow-up clearance and exploitation operations in the area to track fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping.
The military, however, confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives during the encounter, describing them as gallant personnel who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation.
Operation HADIN KAI stated that the failed assault reflects the increasing pressure being mounted on terrorist groups across the North-East and reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations aimed at denying insurgents freedom of movement in the region.
