The Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, has chaired the inaugural meeting of the Halal Compliance Enablement Workstream under the National Halal Economy Strategy, as Nigeria intensifies efforts to position itself within the global halal market.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s participation in the rapidly expanding global halal economy, estimated to be worth over $7 trillion across key sectors including food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, logistics, and Islamic finance.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Uzoka-Anite emphasized the need for credible certification systems, alignment with international standards, and improved trade access to enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global halal value chain.
Key focus areas discussed at the session include the establishment of a National Halal Authority framework, alignment with global standards such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and SMIIC guidelines, the development of Mutual Recognition Agreements, and the deployment of a digital halal certification and traceability system.
The minister noted that the strategy is designed to position Nigeria as a credible and competitive player in the global halal market, while also opening new opportunities for exports, investment, and job creation.
She stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on strong regulatory frameworks, institutional coordination, and adherence to internationally accepted certification processes.
The National Halal Economy Strategy is part of broader government efforts to diversify the economy and expand Nigeria’s access to high-value global markets.
