China Deploys High-Speed Highway Sweepers That Clean Roads Without Stopping Traffic

China has introduced a new generation of high-speed highway cleaning vehicles capable of operating at speeds of up to 80 km/h, marking a major shift in modern road maintenance and traffic management.

Unlike traditional road sweepers that operate between 3 and 20 km/h and often require lane closures, the new machines are designed to clean expressways without disrupting traffic flow. This development is being described as a significant upgrade in infrastructure efficiency and highway safety.

The advanced sweeping systems use high-powered suction technology, intelligent control systems, and dust suppression mechanisms to remove debris, dust, and small stones from busy expressways while vehicles continue moving at full speed.

On heavily trafficked routes such as the Shaoxing–Ningbo expressway, which reportedly handles around 80,000 vehicles daily, the technology enables continuous cleaning without causing delays or requiring partial shutdowns.

Officials say the innovation is part of a broader push toward automation and smart infrastructure management across several Chinese provinces, including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Guangdong. Highway operators report that the new systems are significantly more efficient than conventional methods, with performance improvements described as dramatically faster than manual cleaning operations.

Beyond efficiency, the development is also being highlighted for its safety implications, reducing the need for roadside workers to operate in high-risk environments with fast-moving traffic.

Infrastructure analysts note that the deployment reflects China’s growing investment in data-driven maintenance systems and automated public service technologies aimed at improving long-term operational efficiency and safety standards.

The innovation is being closely watched globally as countries explore new ways to modernise road maintenance while reducing costs, improving safety, and minimising disruption to traffic networks.
