A Nigerian-born surgeon, Oluyinka Olutoye, was part of a medical team that carried out one of the most remarkable fetal surgeries ever recorded, helping save the life of a baby diagnosed with a rare and potentially fatal tumour before birth.
The procedure involved baby LynLee Hope, who was diagnosed while still in the womb with a sacrococcygeal teratoma, a rare tumour that develops near the tailbone. The tumour was growing rapidly and diverting blood away from the fetus, placing her life at serious risk.
Faced with the possibility of losing the baby, doctors opted for an extraordinary intervention. At just 23 weeks of pregnancy, surgeons temporarily removed the fetus from the womb during a highly delicate operation, while maintaining the placenta’s connection to the mother.
During the procedure, the medical team successfully removed a large portion of the tumour that threatened the baby’s survival. Following the surgery, the fetus was carefully returned to the womb, allowing the pregnancy to continue.
Weeks later, LynLee Hope was delivered by Caesarean section and continued receiving medical care after birth.
The operation drew international attention for its complexity and for the possibility it offered a child whose chances of survival had been rapidly diminishing before birth.
Dr. Olutoye, a renowned pediatric surgeon, has been widely recognised for his contributions to fetal and neonatal surgery. His involvement in the groundbreaking procedure highlighted the growing impact of specialists advancing life-saving medical innovations around the world.
