British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the decision in a video message shared on X on Monday, stating that the government could no longer ignore growing concerns over the impact of social media on young people.
“We are banning social media access for under 16s. These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life. I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back,” Starmer said.
The policy comes amid increasing public debate in the UK about the effects of social media on youth mental health, online safety, and exposure to harmful content.
According to the BBC, the UK government is expected to rely on existing legislation, including the Online Safety Act and the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026, to enforce age restrictions and limit access to certain online platforms.
