The stepson of Norway’s Crown Prince, Marius Borg Høiby, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of rape, domestic violence, assault, and other criminal offences in a case that has drawn widespread attention across the country.
Høiby, 29, who became part of Norway’s royal family when his mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, married Crown Prince Haakon in 2001, was found guilty by an Oslo court on two counts of rape, including one attack that took place in the basement of the Crown Prince’s residence.
Prosecutors had charged Høiby with sexually assaulting four women between 2018 and 2024, alleging that the victims were asleep or otherwise unable to resist. The court convicted him on two rape counts while acquitting him on two others.
In addition to the rape convictions, the court found Høiby guilty of assault, domestic violence, drug-related offences, and violations of a restraining order. He had pleaded not guilty to the most serious charges, including rape and domestic violence, but admitted partial guilt to some lesser offences under Norwegian law.
The court imposed a four-year prison sentence, significantly lower than the seven years and seven months sought by prosecutors. Høiby retains the right to appeal the verdict.
During the trial, prosecutors presented extensive evidence, including electronic messages and videos. The proceedings also examined Høiby’s struggles with substance abuse and his personal life.
One of the women who accused him of rape was present in court and reportedly became emotional after hearing the guilty verdict.
The case has generated intense public scrutiny and has affected perceptions of Norway’s royal family. Polls conducted during the trial showed a decline in support for the monarchy, although approval ratings later recovered somewhat.
Political analysts said public interest in the case was heightened by the contrast between the royal family’s public image and the serious allegations heard in court.
The controversy has coincided with a difficult period for the royal household. Crown Princess Mette-Marit has faced public scrutiny over past associations with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and is currently battling pulmonary fibrosis, a serious lung disease. The royal family recently disclosed that she has been placed on a lung transplant waiting list.
Despite the wider impact on the monarchy, legal experts noted that the verdict marks the conclusion of one of Norway’s most closely watched criminal trials in recent years, with the court holding Høiby accountable for multiple offences while leaving open the possibility of an appeal.
