Don Calls for Family Court to Strengthen Child Protection in Borno

By Ahmed Ahmed

A Professor of Law at the University of Maiduguri, Ibrahim Ahmad, has called for the establishment of a Family Court in Borno State to strengthen the implementation of the state’s Child Protection Law and improve access to justice for vulnerable children.

Ahmad made the appeal on Wednesday during a child protection sensitisation workshop for key stakeholders in Maiduguri.

He said the proposed Family Court would provide the institutional framework needed to effectively enforce child protection laws and address cases involving children.

The law professor noted that children in Borno continue to face numerous challenges resulting from the prolonged insurgency, including armed conflict, displacement, child trafficking, child labour, sexual abuse, street begging, drug abuse and other forms of violence.

He urged the Ministry of Women Affairs, the Child Protection Implementation Committee, the Borno State House of Assembly, traditional and religious leaders, as well as civil society organisations, to work together to safeguard the rights and welfare of children.

According to him, the workshop was organised to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of their responsibilities, strengthen institutional coordination and promote practical strategies for implementing the Child Protection Law across the state.

The workshop was organised by a consortium comprising the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria and the Jire Do Foundation under the European Union-funded Strengthening Child Care and Protection Systems in Nigeria project.

Speaking at the event, the Senior Programme Manager of CISLAC, Solomon Adoga, called for greater efforts to tackle the abuse of women and children.

Adoga commended the Borno State Government for reviewing its Child Protection Law but stressed that legal reforms must be backed by effective implementation, sustained public awareness and stronger collaboration to ensure every child enjoys adequate protection.
